Is Low the German coach playing mind games when he says Australia will leave the ball to the Germans and play counter attacking or does he genuinely believe that? Or is he just being polite?
It may well be how it turns out on the day, but the only way an Ange Postecoglou coached team will leave the ball to the opposition will be because we just can't hold the ball.
As we saw in the first half against Saudi Arabia, and pretty much all the game v Brazil.
The intention and Ange's mindset is to dominate. To attack. To keep the ball. To match the opposition.  To compete.
We may well fail but if we do it will be due to lack of quality and not tactics.

EDIT: Now I see what you meant :P . Copied template from earlier game, forgot to edit that bit

Well we lost 3-2 overnight. Probably should lost by a few more but Ryan, the post and some bad finishing flattered us. I didn't think we looked as out of sorts as we did against Brasil, however the Germans had a experimental and youthful side on the park and I don't believe they really got out of 2nd gear. A few good passages of play for us but still a long way to go for us to get the elite countries even with taking into consideration Ange's new formation.

A few good passages of play for us but still a long way to go for us to get the elite countries even with taking into consideration Ange's new formation.
I thought Germany put on a master class in the first half. Their goals could be attributed to our new formation but we were giving goals like these away against top quality opposition in the past with four at the back, so it is really hard to say.
All in all, I was reminded very much of a passage in Ange's book where he describes a Roar loss to Victory and the way Luke De Vere played despite the loss as a bit of a turning point and 'aha' moment for Brisbane Roar. Two championship later, 36 games unbeaten, the rest was history.
I am really hoping the second half was such a moment although perhaps Germany decided to park the bus a bit. I would have thought that in a comp like this though, goal difference is important, so I give the benefit of the doubt to Ange and and the boys on that one, rather than Loew deciding to hold on. Maybe a bit of both looking at his substitutions.
I also kept thinking. Ok so we are losing to Germany. But what great preparation leading into the Japan game.
We seemed to cop it down the left and maybe Smith would make a difference.
Two of our guys that did themselves favours in terms of their prospects were Juric and Rogic. Not just for the goals, but overall performances. And not bad to have a player establishing themselves in a striker role in the best way possible. Two goals against the Saudis and one v Germany.
As for the "experimental" nature of Germany, I don't buy it. What it really reflects is the depth of their talent pool.
Here is the starting line up.

B Leno Bayer Leverkusen
J. Kimmich Bayern Munich
A. Rudiger AS Roma
S. Mustafi Arsenal
J. Hector FC Koln
L. Stindl Borussia Moenchengladbach
S. Rudy TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
L. Goretzka FC Shalke 04
J . Brandt Borussia Moenchengladbach
J. Draxler PSG
S. Wagner TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

For me the glass is half full. But we need to improve in the next game and keep improving.

The more I think about it the more I'm starting to believe that we're gonna be ok. As you state Chico, Ange is pressing a system into the squad and at first it's been alien and full of holes for us all so you can only imagine what the players would be thinking.

However, with each outing, the players get more used to the system and more comfortable in the roles. Yes we're still giving away stupid goals BUT it does seem like the likes of Leckie, Juric, Rogic and Mooy are starting to buy in and understand where they need to be at most times during a game. Once Sainsbury and whoever are at the back with him get more solid as well we will improve because as it stands we're getting whacked badly on the counter. How do we stop counters? By controlling the ball, defending as a complete unit and not gifting the ball to the opposition is dangerous areas.

Big question is: Can the penny drop enough by the time we play Japan?

The Germans were faster both physically and mentally.

They dominated the first 60 minutes then either ran out of steam or just conserved energy.

Our left sided defence was woeful.

Our two goals especially the second were the result of poor keeping.

Good keeping by Ryan, the post and unlucky finishing averted a disaster.

I still continue to see attackers strolling through the middle of our defence.

All against a second string side.

I dont see any grounds for confidence

Good commentary. ...

So when we are defending...we are a 442?
When we are attacking....a 343?

What's the transition on the counter? DM becomes the 4th cb? Then a CM to cover the DM? Luongo caught with his pants down in that moment for first goal...

Feel like it's the transition that is killing us defensively.

Having the wingers like leckie drop back into wing backs is a huge tireless job.

Here's an idea.... play the old school 442 first half.... grind out a 0-0 HT game to tire the opposition a little...switch to the more attacking 352 or 343 2nd half.

Some are saying partnering mooy in the deep role next to mils was th difference in the 2nd?

I'd say good idea.... moog deep as per huddersfield.. luongo and rogic higher

A 3xx formation needs players who keep the ball ... exciting times for aussie football

That is the glass half empty view for sure.  I don't disagree, with your points Sep, but take a much more positive glass-half-full  view.

According to TWG, Joachim Low was quite complimentary. Perhaps he was being polite and gracious, but even so, the words he used are telling and worth noting.

?What I have seen is there has been a development, a positive development," he said through a translator.
"This team in 2010 - and for a number of years - was playing with long and high balls. That was easy to defend against."
"In the last three or four years they have changed."
"They do more combinations, not playing the long ball."
"It's a team that is courageous and sometimes cheeky enough to challenge the opponents and attack very boldly."
"There are not many teams doing that. They are very bold."
"I think they have developed very well in the last three or four years."

That is a very revealing endorsement of the Ange style.

Regarding Germany being faster mentally, that is true for the most part, although Juric reacted more quickly than the defender for his goal. Juric did not get much ball, but he took his chance well.
There was another time when he really received and held the ball up well, and then laid it off. Very Mark Viduka like. That is an element of our game we need to develop.

Quite possibly Germany did take the foot off the peddle and conserve energy, but if so, almost came unstuck, because Australia finished well.
I would think that Germany would have hoped to get a much better goal difference out of this game than they did because they will have seen Australia as the weakest team in the group.
In that respect, 3-2 was not a great result, especially if they lose against Chile.
Experimental or not, they will not want to be having to go all out in game three and may have to.
Whilst the exercise is very much about them trying out fringe players, for the future, if they don't progress through to the next round, it will not go down well in Germany.
Again, Low's words may well have been talking Australia up for that reason, but the choice of words is an endorsement of Ange's work.

Great posts Chico, and, although I'm generally a pessimist like Sep, the game left me feeling positive. Germany are current world champs and have a very very talented youth system coming in, one that, like Spain, would beat a lot of first teams in the world. Whilst our defending left a lot to be desired (like you said, mostly down our left/their right, which was obvious in how they were attacking), but our attack was pretty good for the most part, and we generally took our chances when they came. We dominated the final 30-35 minutes of the game, and could have had a draw or even a win, so hopefully we continue on the upwards trajectory. Just hope, from a financial standpoint, that we only get a draw against Cameroon and Chile draw with Germany, so I can pick up on a 4 leg multi :P

Cameroon are ranked below us in the world rankings and may not make the World Cup in 2018.
In terms of getting an indication of improvement, we need better performances against the top teams (Chile, Germany etc) for sure, but also need to beat teams like Cameroon.
So in terms of where we are in terms of overall progression, the result, and the way we were outmuscled was a worry.
We really seemed to struggle physically against Cameroon and at times I thought I was watching the Wrestling Channel.
We can talk about tactics, technique, fitness, formations all we like, but it was the Cameroon's physicality (including but not just down to the illegal stuff the ref ref let go) that really disrupted the game plan. We really had no answer.
The way Ryan plays in advanced position so much was picked up by Cameroon and exploited. It will be interesting what Ange does about that. Will we see a change of keeper?
Juric has to be consistent and put away the chances because at this level he won't get many chances.
I did wonder whether bringing Macca on rather than Troisi might gives us more goal scoring capability. Especially with the likes of Gersbach and Leckie getting balls into the box.
In terms of glass half full:
Good first 45 minutes. Pity about the 46th.
Gersbach looked good going forwards, though we still seem weakest on the left defensively.
Credit to Australia. That is twice we have equalised from 1-0 down although culpable again of conceding down the left.
Sainsbury did well again.

Our weakest link is Leckie at the moment. He's obviously not terrible, but he does seem to make the most errors and worst decisions. His crossing is poor and he seems to be in the wrong position when we are making a break on his wing. If we can find someone to do his job better, I think the whole performance of the team will lift.

When it was obvious that Rogic was keeping a player occupied in the middle of the park, why didn't he shift out to a wing to unbalance Cameroon?
