Maccarone is too slow. He does not fit into the system that we currently play. He won't be dropped as Aloisi is fucking pig headed and we know this from his time at Melbourne when he continued to play the flop that was Michael Mifsud.

Despite the flattering score that was a dull half of football. Way to many errant passes and a lack of cohesion makes us almost unwatchable.

Thank f**k for La Rocca otherwise it would still be 0-0.

I ended up changing over to the ladies T20 cricket and in between overs checking on the match.

On the plus side O'Toole looks like he could develop into a decent player for Victory to eventually sign.

FFS ...we won ! ...you guys need a bit of a reality check . We are playing with a makeshift team . We just beat the 2nd top team . Ok it wasn't silky smooth football but we won by 2 clear goals .....and you lot are bagging them.
Sometimes it takes an ugly win to get the ball rolling . The team played with heart and passion tonight.
Its a start and sure beats losing.
I for one will enjoy our win and worry about the next game next week

Like I said we will win :) . Let's hope this continues next week . Good effort from the boys . Happy to see Eric the French score . Some good defending from Young  yet again . How do you drop him when Theo is back ? Pappa is legend defends well scores goals what else you can ask from this guy :) ...

Badly needed win must say .

Relief....

Papa was outstanding. Eric really tries hard. Young consistently good. O'Toole should not be dropped if Brown is not 100%.

I d like to try Pepper in CDM if North comes back next week. We leave a lot of space in midfield and don't track the midfield runners. Holman doesn't get back - looks like two strikers at times.

We look better with Skapetis on the field. Provides width on the right and is fit enough to get back. Holman and FBK are too similar. Both struggle to get back.

The game felt like a could go either way and this time the cards fell for us.
We punished their mistakes. They did not do the same to us and did not take their opportunities.
Papa was man of the match by a country mile even without his goals. Credit to Aloisi also as there is obviously a clear instruction for Papa to get forwards into places where TK would normally go. But the way that Papa marshelled the makeshift defence again was awesome. Papa is turning into a robo cop the way he seems to be everywhere. Let's hope we get reinforcements before his yellow cards rule him out. Pepper also another creditable performance.
It was a contrasting game for goal keepers. Young was superb in the save. Galekovic had a game to forget.
Once again the referee and VAR (lack of) is noteworthy.
That challenge on Tin Tin that took him out. No action by the ref. Dropped ball as I recall. No action by the VAR. So is there a post match review committee anymore or not?
I am starting to agree with JA's comments a few weeks back that the linesman is putting his flag up too early with borderline off side. I am thinking Maccarone's should have been let go. If he scored then, use the VAR then. Perhaps it just takes too long for the TV people to draw the line. But it looked on side.
Maccarone fades in an out of games. No goals again. But at least an assist.
Tin Tin is Broich-like in that he is so quick and effective he is becoming the most fouled player. Good goal.
After our loss in game one, the one eyed Fox crew were toting Kamau for the Socceroos. Along came O'Toole the Kamau tamer. If I had to pick a future Socceroos from those two, it wouldn't be Kamau.
Their Polish guy is a bit of a nutter!!

It does beat losing, you're spot on. The football that has been on offer this season, for mine, has been poor. I've also lost interest in the A-League. It's become stale. The same ten teams and the same recycled players.

Last week we were dead last and without a win and yet we were only four points off of making the finals. What a farce. I've been a football fan since the old NSL days but the last few years of the A-League have been painful.

Am I happy we won? Yeah, of course.

Was I enthralled and entertained along the way? No. The cricket was far more entertaining.

I was hoping to see Franjic at least on bench . What happened to Gamerio ? Played 20 against Mariners and again 2 games no sign . Don't tell me he's injured again ?

That wasn't so much a win as a charitable donation from La Rocca and Galekovic.  Thanks for your generous Christmas gift, fellas!

Still, a win is a win and Eric was terrific.  Is it just me or, is O'Toole already a better left back than Brown?  Does Franjic replace Hingert?

Sadly, I'm with you.   For the first time since season 1, I am seriously considering cancelling my Fox sub, but I'm hanging on in the hope of radical restructuring at FFA and a reinvigoration of expansion plans. If nothing changes, I'm opting out of Fox.  Another season of this would be too much.

It was the most watchable game for me this year. Had a ball and was convinced at half-time that MC would bring us down to earth with 3 goals in the second half. Our extra goal put paid to that.

We have two of the best new foreign players we've had for ages. Despite his lack of apparent effort, Maccarone is the one threatening and creating opportunities for others. Holman is much more of a liability. He needs to be pulled off quicker to let Skapetis do more work earlier on in the second half. Both Eric and FBK are tenacious and unrelenting, although FBK is not as fast or fit.

We are well in with a chance against Shitney next week.

And just a word on Young, how many saves would he have not had to make if his distribution wasn't as bad as it is? I am pretty sure every kick of his ended up in a turnover. His only safe option is a short throw to an attentive defender.
Saving goals is what a goalkeeper is there for, so that's fine, but he also has to complement the rest of the team. I would take Theo back as soon as he is ready.

the first 15 minutes was fantastic, we pressed high and really took the game to them. well deserved 1st goal. MC then came back into it and we had to really battle to stay ahead. I Mckay and Callettie had to really work hard to get control back, the final 15 of the first half was superb apart from the final ball. there were a couple of periods of play very reminiscent of roarcelona days and we deserved the second goal.

Unfortunately the second half was more reminiscent of the start of the season for us, we were lucky to only concede 1 and very lucky to knock the wind out of their sails with our goal. just watched the replay and slater was saying that we were getting over run through the centre of midfield. I disagree we were getting over run out wide were EB and FBK were too lazy/tired to get back and defend. it meant that our central players were getting pulled out of position and holeman was cooked so was not getting back to help out when MM and JC were pulled wide or into the back line to cover pepper and papa. thats why we looked better when Skapetis came on but FBK and Holeman were still not doing enough defensively so it soon reverted back to the same situation.

Pepper is doing well as a makeshift CB but he was again slow to react and out of position for their goal (cant really blame him for it but maybe could have prevented it if he did a bit better). O'toole looks very good, i hope he continues to get minutes.

Ribbons scored the winner for the women.
Men with the first win of the season over a quality team.
May not have been pretty but no complaints here.

Ventured into 332 for the first time in 3 seasons to sit with some mates. I learnt to enjoy the football again even if its ugly. Have a beer and a good laugh and take bad with good. The gentleman  in row 18/19, middle of the bay are a right laugh. Top notch entertainment. Good work boys.

Disagree with comments about EB being too lazy to track back. He has put a solid shift in every game. I thinked he slowed down as the effects of cumulative fouls took their toll. He is rapidly becoming my fabourtite roar player

I am starting to think 22 is the number of fouls per game against any player wearing the Roar number 22 shirt.
Like Tin Tin, Thomas in his first few years was just so much quicker than his opponents and copped an incredible number of fouls per game.
In the end, City literally and without sanction by the ref, kicked Tin Tin off the park. Last week, Tin Tin needed stitches after receiving a Valeri elbow, also not sanctioned by the ref.
Something needs to be done about this disgraceful play.
With games coming up against Sydney sides known for physical play, the officials need to start protecting him.
The officials seem to struggle telling the  difference between two players contesting a ball (the incident leading to Tin Tin's yellow card) and the out and out thuggery which Tin Tin is copping.
After the melee when Hingert was chopped by the Polish guy, Tin Tin quite clearly gestured to the ref to open his bloody eyes.

The lazy comment was more directed to fbk and Holeman. EB was more tired and fould

Great grinding win by the boys. They're slowly building and how good that even with our injury issues the boys on the park stuck together and got the job  done.. Not pretty but for once we took the few opportunities we had.

Side note, JA was with the boys on the panel postgame and was asked about injuries, fitness etc and he said that he takes responsibility for the slow start to the season and talked about the lack of match fitness for some players because they had niggles etc coming into preseason and some have been nursed through so far.

We will struggle to keep off the bottom due to  the "slow start" and  lack of points so far and the games coming up.
Sydney away
WSW away
Phoenix semi-away
Victory home in a month's time.
I wouldn't be confident about picking up many points with the Phoenix game potentially being a must win bottom of the table clash.

yes but we get SFC after the FFA cup (hopefully it is a bruising physical game) on the back of a couple of short turn arounds for them. I thin we may be able to jag a result from that game. WSW are also a long time without a win (even if they havent lost) and will still be getting used to Gombau as manager.

we are starting to look better, are finally starting to look close to match fit and should have players starting to come back, North, franjic, brown, gameiro we could get on a role.

Agree that the last game was a big improvement, but I will be amazed if we take a point away from either the Smurfs or the Drive-bys.   I honestly think our race this year is to stay clear of the spoon.

City gifted us the points.  We won't get that lucky again with SFC or Wanderers.

The differences / improvements have been:
Playing with two out and out wing backs as oppose to using Jade North.
Arrival of Tin Tin which injects pace and energy and quality
Jamie Young coming in. Jamie is the best/one of the best shot stoppers in the comp
Papa coming to fitness so able to get up and down and able to organise the defence. It may also be a case of having him as chief rather than two chiefs when Jado is playing.
Improved fitness all round but still along way off being able to run over teams.

But we got lucky with the City mistakes and their misses. It was a win and I will take a win any day. But we are a long way of being anything like serious contenders. The game against Sydney will give us an indication.
I seem to remember we thought we might get one over Sydney last years due to a  mid week FFA Cup game, and they still were too good for us. I expect the same again on Saturday.
