AFC World Cup draw
« on: April 11, 2016, 07:08:09 PM »
While we've all be focused on the end of the HAL, the draw for the next round of WC Qual matches are about to be held.

Here are the vital bits

http://www.the-afc.com/2018-world-cup/russia-2018-asian-qualifiers-final-round-draw-the-teams

At Tuesday's draw, the 12 teams will be drawn into two groups of six teams to play home-and-away under the round-robin format.

The winner and runner-up of each group (four teams in total) will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia finals while the third-placed teams of each group (two teams in total) will advance to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Asian Play-off Round.

The winner of the Asian Play-off Round (one team in total) will take on the side that finishes fourth in the fifth round of the CONCACAF qualifiers in a two-legged inter-confederation playoff.

The 12 nations, seeded based on the latest FIFA rankings which were released on April 7, will be drawn from six country pots as follows:

Pot 1: Iran (42nd), Australia (50th)
Pot 2: Korea Republic (56th), Japan (57th)
Pot 3: Saudi Arabia (60th), Uzbekistan (66th)
Pot 4: United Arab Emirates (68th), China PR (81st)
Pot 5: Qatar (83rd), Iraq (105th)
Pot 6: Syria (110th), Thailand (119th)

So we can't be drawn against Iran and only face Korea or Japan.  Don't care which one, personally.  As for the rest, well I don't have any great fears.

I'm sure if you tune in to the AFC web site you will be able to watch the draw and there is every chance that Foxsports will show it as well, even if it's just on the Foxsports News channel.  I think the draw happens at 6pm, Brisbane time.

Definitely got the tougher group. If we stuff up a few games, we might not even make it out. Most likely we will, but there's still a very real possibility

3 out of 4 of the last games are at home which is a good thing.

plus i think it's a bonus we play at home v Japan first.  You'd hope by the time we play them the second time, we'd have qualified or at least just need a draw.

In saying that I think we had the same situation last time, where we played Japan in Brisbane before we played them away.

None the less, is it the tougher group.  Maybe.  It's definitely a group we can qualify from.

Someone on Facebook pointed out (and quite rightly) that having Japan in our group is also a blessing. The top two in each group qualify with the third place going into a play off with another confederation. Hopefully having Japan will mean that they beat the other teams and minimise the points of everyone else.

yes correct.  I think they were slow to start in the previous rd though.  didn't they have a draw with singapore.  Hopefully they don't have any slip ups this time.

I also think our squad is better than the previous squad for the last WC.  Some might not have the same xp, but at least they've all come through under Ange and know what to expect.

Worth noting that there's an extra match day we can take advantage of....

There's 2 FIFA match dates for 7th to 15th November 2016. All we have atm is Thailand away at the end of the window.

There's also a few teams who might have open dates in early November. They're qualified for the final round of Asian Cup quals, BUT not involved in the qualifiers FOR those final round of qualifiers.

So, the nations we could travel to could be Singapore (nice new shiny National Stadium), Vietnam, Hong Kong, sadly not the Philippines (as they're already hosting Kyrgyzstan on that date in Manila).

Also, since there are TWO short-handed groups in European qualifying we could play at either Cyprus or Turkey (because... well.... those two nations definitely won't be playing each other any time soon.... :P )

Saw a rumour on FB that we've got the Japan game at Suncorp again. Apparently will be the first home game in Brisbane that hasn't been an Asian Cup game since 2012

The only thing I can think of there is because both Sydney and Mel are involved in hosting games v Greece, so they want to share the love.

Unreal if true.

Field should be in good nick by then as well.

Does make a lot of sense.

Then in 2017, give the games against UAE, Saudi Arabia and Thailand to Sydney, Melbourne and I guess Adelaide.

So here's how it could flow....

Iraq - Perth (we then just take one non-stop flight to UAE [Perth-Dubai flight])
Japan - Brisbane
UAE - Sydney/Melbourne
Saudi Arabia- Adelaide
Thailand - Sydney/Melbourne

Ange has been in the papers today/yesterday asking for good pitches and big crowds.

Makes it hard to see them put the Iraq game at Suncorp, either of the Sydney venues, or even Ettihad considering all will be at the end of the NRL/AFL seasons.

Newcastle or Canberra, perhaps.

Adelaide has already had one this year, so maybe Perth, which logistically would make it better to fly over to the UAE for game 2.

Shouldn't we be trying to jetlag them?

If we hosted Iraq in Perth, UAE would be flying back from Japan to meet us in Dubai. No jetlag advantage to anyone really.
