Tommy Oar set to sign for APOEL
« on: June 19, 2017, 10:54:34 AM »
Tommy Oar on his way to Greece (?) for ?350,000? Translation from a Greek site via 'The Roar Review':

"It opened the way for the acquisition of Tommy Oar as he fled from the Middle the highest "obstacle", which to many seemed hitherto as insurmountable! The administration of APOEL, well, found with the Brisbane Roar, a group that has the permission of journeyman footballer.

The contract with the Oar, as we reveal, there is 350,000 euro clause for release. The makers of galazokitrinwn after several (and coordinated) actions, put that package of proposals in the Club of Brisbane that was ultimately accepted, so all that remains is to strike the right balance with the Oar, which is considered a matter of time that will be achieved.

Of course this is a highly welcome development, since, ultimately, if possible the acquisition of the 25 year old Australian practicing extreme offensive will be a major addition to the mesoepithetiki line. Has a great football age and Mario Bain who recommended its acquisition knows very well what may give in total"

Could Brisbane Roar?s Tommy Oar be headed to Cyprus?

Brisbane Roar attacker could be on his way to Cyprus, according to a report in Cypriot media.

Philenews reports local giants APOEL have struck an agreement with Brisbane for the player?s signing, triggering a ?350,000 release clause.

Their report suggests all that is left to work out in a deal are personal terms.

Roughly translated, it reads: ?After several (and concerted) actions, the decision-makers of APOEL set up that package of proposals to the Brisbane club which was finally accepted, so the only thing left is to find the golden incision with Oar, which is a matter of time to be achieved.?

APOEL are the reigning Cypriot champions and are due to compete in the second round of Champions League qualifying.

Oar, 25, is in his second stint at the Roar having returned there from a spell overseas with FC Utrecht and Ipswich Town.

Oar?s contract with the Roar runs for another season.

Brisbane have already announced the signing of former Melbourne Victory winger Fahid Ben Khalfallah this offseason.

I wouldn't mind if he went, but the question would be whether Roar would actually use some funds to find another decent marquee.

Is this deja vue for JA?
On his very first meeting with the supporters he said how at Heart he was building a team and the club sold all the players he was building his squad around.
He has gone form 4 3 3 to 4 3 0 with Borrello, Macca and Oar going. Macca being the only one out of contract.
Things have got just that bit harder for JA. Especially having let Broich slip through his fingers.
Thanks for the  post Roary, but it is frustrating that despite having a flagship newspaper in Queensland, we have to get news via google translate.
With Origin starving the sports media of air space, the little bit of oxygen left for football is taken up with the Confed Cup and nothing left for Roar's "marquee" player.
Overseas where football has a real profile, the media can walk and chew gum at the same time.
Surely there is a subtext to this story?
My understanding was that Tommy deferred wages due to Thomas being the marquee last season. What happens now?
The amount in question wouldn't be 350,000 by any chance?

Sounds like it is Euro 350,000 which if AUS $500k plus if it goes ahead.
Still don't know what a "golden incision" is

His contract was just backended ie we will pay you $100,000 this season and $400,000 next season instead of paying 250,000 each season. if he moves away then we dont pay him the 400,000 its good for him as he will likely get paid more than that in europe and it is great for us as we have get a transfer fee, and a had a player play for half price for a season.

if this goes ahead we become very short of attacking stock, FBK, Holeman and Daggers are the only real options we have on the books. two of them are old and definitely are not 90 minute players and the other is a youngster who probably shouldn't be relied on to start. We really need 3 starters

Totally agree. But something is wrong if a 33 year old marquee cannot play 90 minutes. 33 should not be too old for A League.
So we have Ronaldo at 32 sweeping all before him in the top leagues and internationally and Holman at 33 unable to play 90. There is only a year between them.
JA has a tough job now getting quality  three players.

Why do we always have to bring discussions to age !!!!  If "not too young but good enough" applies then "not too old but good enough" should be the norm as well.
Especially here in oz where if you have a good enough young players you are sure not to keep him as they want to challenge themselves o/s.

It seems the only players to invest in, should be the ones that have been o/s and dint fit in or failed etc. so at least you can build a team over some years..

I am not really saying that any of them are either too old or too young to be starters it is more on the objective evidence from last season, Holeman ran out of legs more often then not before the 70 minute mark, that is just his style he is an all energy player and when he fatigues it is obvious that output drops, FBK is in the same boat, although he is more likely to last 90 mins he seems to save himself if he knows he is playing 90 mins and drifts in and out of games. Both players output seems to be much higher if they are limited to less than 70mins. Daggers on the other hand is not too young, but definitely has a lot to learn, when he has started (against quality opposition not global) he has looked a bit over awed, although i think more game time will help him i think he is not yet up to leading a line from the start or being the creative player from the start. I think it is perfect for Daggers and Holeman to split games, 65-70 for Holeman, Daggers coming on and causeing havok at the end

Honestly, you'd have to assume Holman is going to be playing full games... Pretty sure he didn't get a full pre-season last year and he had an injury that took him out for 6-8 weeks.

That is good news though... We now have a marquee spot... so maybe we can get Troisi? Scott McDonald?

Troisi wants a million per season. No way anyone should be paying him that, even if they did have the money available.

McDonald definitely hasn't done enough to warrant a marquee spot. Wouldn't say no to him under the cap though.

Hopefully JA is going all out to find us some obscure talent who ends up being our best player for the next 7 years.

TOMMY Oar is set for a return to Europe after Brisbane Roar agreed to sell the former Socceroo to Cypriot club APOEL FC.

It?s understood Oar will fly out from Brisbane on Monday night for a medical with APOEL, who have triggered Oar?s EUR350,000 ($A514,772) release clause and need only to reach personal terms to secure the 25-year-old for next season.

Cypriot outlet Philenews says the club, coached by Dutchman Mario Been, is ?very close? to striking a deal with the left-sided winger, who has another year left on his Brisbane contract but appears highly unlikely to see it out. Oar spent five fruitful years in Europe playing for Eredivisie side FC Utrecht but returned to the A-League after an ill-fated stint with English Championship club Ipswich Town in 2015-16, citing homesickness.

He was set to become one of Brisbane?s two marquee players for the coming season, along with Brett Holman

But having failed to reach his peak in his second stint for the Roar the move could provide coach John Aloisi with a handy vacancy as he looks to rebuild his squad following the departures of attacking trio Jamie Maclaren, Thomas Broich and Brandon Borrello.

Oar, capped 34 times for Australia, holds a Spanish passport and would not be counted as a foreigner for APOEL, who see him as an ideal replacement for Greek international Giannis Gianniotas.

Gianniotas was on loan from Olympiacos last season and helped APOEL reach the final 16 of the Europa League for the first time in the club?s history. APOEL are the reigning Cypriot champions, earning them a second qualifying round berth in next season?s UEFA Champions League.

I'm happy with this transfer. Oar would be commanding a Marquee spot this coming season and based on his performances in the season just gone it was not justifiable IMO.

JA now has the opportunity (depending on the club granting a decent release of $$) to chase a marquee. Could Troisi be in the frame now? Would we look at Kruse(still un-contracted?)?

One thing's for sure, a free marquee spot for an attacking player is a good spot to be in.
A champion is one who gets up when he can't.

According to Marco the deal is not as simple as us getting the 350,000 Euro.
The cash is dependent on Tommy's performance and based on the second half of the last season we might see very little of nothing much at all.
But obviously we have funds for alternatives. Finding a complete forward line though is a real challenge
And we need this to happen very soon and not the day before the new season.
These new guys are going to need time to settle in and we can't afford to wait half a season for that.
Don't we start training in a couple of weeks?

Smart business from the Cypriots then. If we see any of that money I'll be surprised.

Let's get this deal done :)

'Losing' Oar has several flow on effects:
1) Removes the movement at the end of the season for free or discussion over marquee wages continuing
2) Formation - could we move to the in vogue 3 at the back (5-2-2-1)

Avraam P         Devere         North   (Rowles, Bowles in reserve)
Hingert (RWB) (Ingham in reserve)                                                                 Brown (LWB)
                                                                     TK                     McKay/Caletti
                                 New Signing/Holman (RAM)                                                        FBK (LAM)
                                                                            D'Agostino/New Signing (CF)

I think JA will keep to 4-2-3-1 but he may also be tempted to 2 up front (4-2-2-2) if a good striker is not available.
