Les Murray Dead
« on: July 31, 2017, 12:56:23 PM »
ABC News reporting as breaking news that Les Murray is dead at 71.

What a sad loss. A Champion of the game during the wilderness years.

Always remembered for his passion and support for the game.

Who can forget his partnership with Johnny Warren.

Very sad.

Rest in Peace.

Shocked to read this sad news.
Les was less prominent in his latter years but I will remember him and Johnny as being the life blood of football broadcasting for many years.
We owe both of them so much.

A very sad day for football,

Les and Johnny were the best football commentators we have ever had in this country, i grew up watching and listening to both.

I enjoyed reading his Football articles and Les discussing the way forward for football in this country.

You will always be remembered Les

RIP

I am deeply saddened by this news. It's like a very good friend has died.

After growing up in Oakey and Toowoomba, where the only sports you heard of were Rugby League and sometimes Rugby Union, Les and Johnny showed me that it was OK to love football.

The only exposure I had to football prior to SBS was Match Of The Day. I'd never heard of the World Cup, Serie A, The Bundesliga, or any other international competition until I was almost 20.

I have no doubt that the A-League as we know it would not exist with out Les. He did more than anyone else to bring football into the mainstream.

Thank you Les for helping football in this country to become what it is today, and for it to become such a big and important part of my life.
I see it, but I do not believe it!

Graham Arnold has tweeted that the FFA Cup should be renamed as the Les Murray Cup.
For once I totally agree with GA. Surely we have to honour the memory of Les Murray in some special way like this.
The FFA Cup reaches into so many football communities and clubs throughout Australia.

Sounds like it will happen.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian today said that Les Murray would be given a state procession.

If you haven't done so already, I recommend you head to SBS On Demand and watch Two Weeks in June.
It is not only a wonderful tribute to Les Murray but also a fantastic and emotional recap of Australia's 2006 World Cup appearance.
